Plant Care – Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegata
Light: Place your Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegata under bright and indirect sunlight, and do avoid direct sunlight because it will cause its leaves to scorch and dry up.
Water: Water your Alocasia thoroughly and make sure that the soil is evenly moist. Water your plant whenever the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch, and make sure to water till some water flows through the pot’s drainage holes. Just like many other plants, Alocasias do not do well with wet feet. Do not overwater your plant, and watch out for signs of leaves turning yellow and limp.
Soil: The Alocasia thrives in well-aerated soil that drains water quickly, and therefore should not be placed in soils that are too compacted and heavy, which cause prolonged periods of water retention. And this can lead to root problems, for instance, root rot.
Fertiliser: Feed your plant with a water-soluble Fertiliser with an NPK ratio of 20-20-20 once a month.
Humidity Requirement: Medium To High
Fun Facts about the Alocasia genus: Did you know? Widely known as the Elephant Ears plant, the Alocasia is popular for having the ability to produce large and ornamental foliage. Typically found in the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia, the Alocasia belongs to the Arum genus.

FAQs about Alocasia Macrorrhiza:
1. Can I water my Alocasia Macrorrhiza plants every day?
Watering schedules for the Alocasia Macrorrhiza are dependent on its environment and the potting mix it is potted in. If your Alocasia is placed outdoors where it receives shade, the heat from the outdoor environment will likely dry up your Alocasia Macrorrhiza’s soil quicker when compared to placing your plant indoors. A good rule of thumb that we all can follow would be to touch the soil to determine whether it is time to water. If the top 2 inches of the soil feel dry to touch, it is time to give your plant some water.
2. Can I pot my Alocasia Macrorrhiza plants in full soil?
We always recommend potting your Alocasia Macrorrhiza in a gritty soil mix that can provide good water drainage. We often see overwatering as a common problem for indoor plants.
Overwatering plants can lead to water lodged in the potting mix, resulting in root rot which will eventually lead to the demise of your plant. We recommend using a well-draining potting mix potted in a pot with more drainage holes to prevent overwatering.
3. What are the contents of a gritty soil mix?
The components of a simple gritty soil mix that many of us at The Green Corner use comprises 2 parts Peat moss/ soil, 1 part pumice and 1 part perlite. If you would like a grittier soil mix, add more pumice and perlite till you are satisfied. We have used this for our Alocasia and they are growing well with no signs of overwatering. When placed indoors with a gritty soil mix, you will usually only need to water your plants once a week. However, it will still be recommended to touch the soil to determine whether your plants need to be watered.
