Plant Care – Dracaena fragrans
Light: Place your Dracaena fragrans under bright and filtered sunlight. Do avoid direct sunlight as it will scorch its leaves and dry up. Also, Place your plant near a window and make sure it receives filtered sunlight. The plant can tolerate some low light; however, new leaves will be smaller.
Water: Allow the top surface of the soil to dry up between watering the plant. We recommend watering it once a week or whenever necessary.
However, do take note that overwatering your Dracaena can cause water beds, and this will result in root problems. Above all, pair your plant with a well-draining potting mix to avoid soggy soil and root rot.
Soil: The Dracaena thrives in a well-draining potting mix.
Fertiliser: Feed your plant with balanced houseplant Fertiliser every two to 3 weeks.
Humidity Requirement: Medium to High.
Give it the occasional mist if placed in a dryer environment.

The Dracaena GenusÂ
Dracaena is a genus of about 40 species of flowering plants, in the family Agavaceae. The common dracaena, Dracaena fragrans, is native to tropical Africa and tropical America. Dracaena Genus is a genus of small to medium-sized trees, shrubs and rhizomatous perennial herbs. Their smooth, glossy leaves are arranged in opposite decussate pairs or whorls (unopposed leaf arrangement), decussate in the axils of the upper and lower leaf surfaces, and unopposed on their veins. They have small cream-white flowers with yellow specks which are borne in short racemes along the upper part of an erect flower stem. This plant is found primarily in Africa and Australia.

Attractive, durable and easy to grow, dracaena fragrans is a versatile indoor plant as well as a great choice for outdoor containers or hanging pots.
Dracaena fragrans is also unique houseplant that can be long-lived and continues to look good even in the most challenging conditions. The Dracaena fragrans plant offers a long flowering period with both short and long blooming for an amazing display of flowers.
Dracaena fragrans is Commonly Known as the Dragon Tree or Rose plantÂ

Dracaena Fragrans care
Dracaena fragrans are a beautiful houseplant and are easy to care for. While they have minimal care requirements, Dracaena fragrans do need plenty of water, so their pot should always be standing in water.
If you are new to caring for dracaena fragrans, Dracaena care is simple. The most common reason that plants fail is due to improper watering. Avoid overwatering the plant by keeping the soil moist, instead of waterlogged. This will prevent rot and allow the plant to stay well-hydrated. Overwatering can create root rot, heart rot, or mildew on your dracaena (especially if you use tap water). To best prevent these issues from occurring, remove excess water before allowing too much of it to penetrate deep into the soil.
Dracaena Fragrans Repotting tips
Lightly remove the plant from the pot when is it root-bounded. Careful not to damage the roots by handling it gently without any sharp tools. Place it in a bigger pot and add a suitable soil mix as shown below. Do ensure that the soil is well-draining to avoid causing root rot.
Dracaena Fragrans Flowers
Dracaena fragrans flowers emerge from pink colored buds into masses of white flowers that open in the evening. They have a highly fragrant, sweet scent that will fill your home.
The fragrance can become overwhelming after a few days so you may have to move the plant outdoors, especially if anyone in your household suffers from allergies or has a sensitive nose.
The flower stalks can range in size from a few inches in length for an indoor plant up to 3 feet (90 cm) long for a large outdoor tree. There may be one flower spike or a few blooming at the same time.
The flowers produce their fragrance for 3 to 7 days before the flowers wither away.
Caring for your Begonia can be very easy! Just follow these simple steps below and your Dracaena Fragrans will thrive:
Sunlight: Filtered indoor light works best (through a sheer curtain in front of a sunny window) or a semi-shade spot is an ideal location. Never place a dracaena plant in direct sun, as the rays will scorch its leaves.
Water: When watering your Dracanea fragrans make sure the soil is thoroughly soaked and drain off the excess water. The soil should stay moderately dry between waterings. Rainwater is an excellent choice!
Fertiliser: Keep plant in top form by feeding the plants every few weeks with a dilute solution of liquid fertiliser or sprinkling solid slow-release fertiliser over the soil.
Dracaena fragrans soil: Use loose, loamy potting soil mix .The roots don’t like to sit in water, so make sure the soil has good drainage.

FAQs about Dracaena Fragrans
1. How tall and how wide are Dracaena Fragrans trees?
Dracaenas can grow 2 to 10 feet tall, depending on the cultivar. It is easy to maintain these plants at shorter heights if desired. Upright types will usually be no more than 2 feet wide. If planted in a small pot, it may restrict its growth and will not grow tall fast. The trees can grow up to 15m if planted in soil, given the right conditions.Â
2. What are the common problems associated with this plant?
In the home, plant diseases are very rarely a problem. Too much or too little water plus insects and mites are the main problems. Root rot usually results from a soil mix that does not drain quickly or overly frequent watering. Scale insects and mites are the most common insect pests of dracaena.
Dry tips and edges are usually caused by too little humidity. Round dry patches and streaks on the leaves may be caused by excessive sunlight on the foliage. A sudden loss of many leaves can be caused by changes in temperature, too much water, poor drainage or heavy insect infestations. Leaf tips and margins may burn or become yellow if plants are fertilized too heavily.
Dracaena is very sensitive to fluoride. Symptoms include yellowing of the tips or margins of the leaf or dead, scorched areas. Avoid potting soils that have a high percentage of perlite and keep the soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 to prevent fluoride from causing injury. Do not use fertilizer which contains superphosphate since it often has high levels of fluorine.Â
3. Should you fertilize your Dracaena Fragrans plants?
Yes. You may use a slow release fertilizer such as the Nutricote 18-6-8 100 days Slow-release Pellet fertilizer. Using a slow release fertilizer can help to prevent over fertilizing.
4. Can you propagate this plant from cuttings?
Top Cuttings – The first option is to take top cuttings, which result from the removal of the top of the plant. While completely removing the top portion of the parent plant may sound alarming, growth should resume quite quickly from growth nodes after cutting. Make a cut below the leaf line of the plant, making sure to include several nodes of the plant’s stem. Cuttings can be planted in a container with moist soil, or they can be placed in a vase of clean water. Cuttings propagated in water require little time before roots begin to form. Once roots begin to form, pot up the plants in a container.
Stem Cuttings – Stem cuttings are one of the most common means of plant propagation. Growing new dracaena in this manner is perfect for gardeners who want to produce multiple plant clones at one time. For first time plant propagators, this method may seem drastic, but rest assured that growth will resume as long as at least half the plant stem is left intact.
