Plant Care – Ficus Lyrata
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid harsh, midday sun, which can scorch its leaves.
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure thorough watering, allowing excess water to drain away, and avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Soil: Thrives in a well-draining potting mix. A mix containing peat, pine bark, and perlite is ideal for promoting aeration and drainage.
Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows down.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity levels. Regular misting or using a humidifier can help maintain optimal conditions, especially in drier indoor environments.
Fun Fact about the Ficus Lyrata: Did you know? Despite its popularity as a houseplant, the Fiddle-leaf fig is native to the rainforests of West Africa, where it can grow up to 15 metres tall! In its natural habitat, it often starts life as an epiphyte, growing on other trees before rooting in the ground.
