Plant Care – Schlumbergera ‘Christmas Cactus’
Light: Place your Schlumbergera ‘Christmas Cactus’ under indirect sunlight, and do avoid direct sunlight because it will cause its leaves to turn yellow and pale. They prefer diffused light or partial shade.
Water: Water your Schlumbergera thoroughly and ensure that the soil is evenly moist. Water your plant whenever the top 3 inches of the soil is dry to the touch, and make sure to water till some water flows through the pot’s drainage holes. Underwatering will cause its leaves to dry up and turn brown.
Soil: Schlumbergera thrives in well-aerated soil that drains water quickly and, therefore, should not be placed in soils that are too compacted and heavy, which causes prolonged periods of water retention. And this can lead to root problems, for instance, root rot. We recommend using a gritty mix for your Schlumbergera: mix 2 part peat moss, one part pumice and one part perlite.
Fertiliser: For best results, fertilise with a slow-release granular fertiliser. Over-fertilising can also result in the demise of the plant. Always follow the fertiliser manufacturer’s instructions when fertilising your plant.
Humidity Requirement: Medium To High. Give it a mist or place it around other plants to increase the overall humidity of its environment.
Fun Facts about the Schlumbergera genus: Did you know? The Schlumbergera is a genus of cacti with six to nine different species found in the mountains of south-eastern Brazil. They grow on trees or rocks in habitats that are generally shady with high humidity.
