Plant Care – Strelitzia Nicolai ‘Bird of Paradise’
Light: Place your Strelitzia Nicolai ‘Bird of Paradise’ under bright and indirect sunlight, and do avoid direct sunlight because it will cause its leaves and flowers to scorch and dry up. Place it in an area where it can receive sun in the morning and shade during mid-day.
Water: Water your Strelitzia thoroughly and ensure that the soil is evenly moist. Water your plant whenever the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch, and make sure to water till some water flows through the pot’s drainage holes. Like many other plants, Strelitzia does not do well with wet feet. Do not overwater your plant, and watch for signs of leaves turning brown and crunchy.
Soil: The Strelitzia thrives in well-aerated soil that drains water quickly and therefore should not be placed in soils that are too compacted and heavy, which cause prolonged periods of water retention. And this can lead to root problems, for instance, root rot.
Fertiliser: The plant is a heavy feeder. Fertilise your plant with a general slow-release fertiliser. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when fertilising your plant.
Humidity Requirement: High. Give it a mist if the air gets dry.
Fun Facts about the Aphelandra genus: Did you know? The bird of paradise is closely related to the banana plant. Its name, the bird of paradise, is derived from its resemblance to the tropical bird of the same name!
