The Blueberry tree is a slow grower and will require time and commitment, taking about 2 – 3 years to reach the stage of harvesting them. Take up the challenge!
Plant Care – ‘Bluecrop’ Blueberry
Light: Place your ‘Bluecrop’ Blueberry tree outdoors where it can receive full and bright direct sunlight. Avoid placing it under trees as it might not get enough sun and will compete for water and nutrients as well.
Water: Water your plant thoroughly to ensure that moisture reaches the deepest part of the roots. As the plant is situated outdoors, water the plant frequently and thoroughly, ensuring the soil is kept moist but not drenched.
Soil: The plant requires acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.5 for it to thrive. Suppose your soil is not at the necessary acidic level; you can use sulphur or sphagnum peat moss to amend the acidic levels. For sulphur, it will be best to add it while planting the plant. This is because sulphur requires several months to react and change the pH level of the soil. For sphagnum peat moss, add 4 to 6 inches of sphagnum peat moss to the top 6 to 8 inches of soil. Dig out the required amount of soil and insert your sphagnum peat moss, and covering it back with some soil. If your soil is closer to a neutral pH level, you might need an additional inch of peat in your soil.
Fertiliser: Light green or red leaves are signs that your plant requires fertilising. We would recommend using acid Fertiliser to bring down the pH levels in the soil to bring the soil back to its ideal condition. Do try to maintain a few inches of wood mulch around the plant throughout its lifetime.
Humidity Requirement: Medium
Fun Facts about the Blueberries: Did you know? Blueberries will not bear many fruits during the first 2 to 3 years and will need about five years for a bigger harvest. The blueberry plant will mature and grow fully in at least 8 to 10 years.
