Commonly grown as a potted plant indoors in Singapore, the Kalanchoe is a succulent plant with thick fleshy stems and leaves. Kalanchoe produces clusters of tiny flowers above dark green, waxy leaves. The bright and vibrant colours of the flowers are regarded as auspicious to the Chinese, thus the plant is selected as one of the festive flowers alongside others such as azaleas and camellias during the Lunar New Year in Singapore.

Plant Care – Kalanchoe

Light: Place your Kalanchoe in an area where it can receive an abundance of bright and indirect sunlight. Avoid placing it under direct sunlight as it will scorch its leaves.

Water: Allow the top two inches of the soil to dry before watering. Ensure that the soil is thoroughly moist.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix like cactus or succulent soil for your Kalanchoe.

Fertiliser: Fertilise your Kalanchoe with diluted fertiliser once a month.

Humidity Requirement: Medium. Kalanchoes are not particular about humidity.

Fun Facts about the Kalanchoe: Kalanchoes require long nights of up to 14hrs to induce flowering, usually blooming in November or December in Singapore and last around four weeks. Depending on hybrids, the flowers can be red, pink, dark pink, yellow, or white. The colours of the flowers can be enhanced under bright sunlight once established.
