Types of hanging air plantsÂ
There are huge selection of air-hanging plants out there. But here are some of the more commonly sold air plants in the market:
- Tillandsia ionantha – The Tillandsia ionantha is commonly called the sky plant. It is one of the most popular air plant variety. It blooms brightly during the end of its lifespan, with shiny greenish-silver leaves enhancing its beauty. As a bromeliad, it has shorter stems than other plants and does well in tropical conditions.
- Tillandsia maxima – The Tillandsia maxima originates from Mexico and is a sun-loving plant. It requires filtered sunlight to thrive well and grows to a height of 15cm.
- Tillandsia usneoides – The Tillandsia usneoides might just be the representative of the air plant category. This airplant comes to most people’s mind when recalling about air-plants as it is the most commonly seen. It is more commonly known as Spanish Moss. This variety is different from other types of air plants, as the leaves drapes in a downward direction rather than upward.
- Tillandsia cyanea– Pink bracts protruding from the center look just like a feather quill, hence the name Pink Quill Plant. Although it’s an epiphyte, still it does considerably well in soil, unlike other air plants. Provide bright natural light, and it’ll continue to bloom!
Air plants CareÂ
Light– If you are keeping your air plants indoors, you will want to make sure that they are near an adequate light source. This can be within 3-5 feet of a window, or near an artificial light source. Take note to not let your air plants get too much direct sun, as this can be harmful, even in an indoor environment. If you are keeping your plants outside, make sure they are in a shaded area that does not receive full sun. There are only a few varieties that can handle direct sun.
Water – Place the plants face down in a bowl, sink, or container and lets soak for 10-20 minutes. Always take care to gently shake any excess water off the base of the plants, as sitting water can cause rot and damage/kill the plant.
How to display Air plants
Properly displaying and caring for your air play display is just as important as the plant itself. You wouldn’t want to place your new plants in the middle of the window or on a busy shelf next to other plants and have them suffocate from lack of light. Air plants, like all houseplants, need bright, indirect sunlight between 10am-6pm (direct sunlight can burn them), but they are also more forgiving than most houseplants in regards to water. Soaking them once a week is usually fine unless you live in a dry area with high humidity- then it may be more frequent.
A display of air plants is easy to arrange and full of personality. Use clear jars, vases, or planters to hold your plants. Keep them as simple as possible by using only one plant per container so your guests can focus on the unique beauty of each one. Bring bright, vibrating ferns like Spanish moss into the home and watch them slowly begin to grow! You may also consider making a beautiful hanging air plant holder (DIY) for your beloved airplants! Consider alternatives like hanging air plants on walls using a string and a nail to attach it on.Â

FAQs about Air hanging plantsÂ
1. What is the typical lifespan of an air plant?
The life expectancy of different types of air plants varies, and while some air plants live for just one year, the most popular varieties generally survive for between three to five years, given good care.
One feature of these plants is that they die after flowering, having put all their energy into making their blooms. However, this is not the end for most plants, as they will produce babies, known as ‘pups’, around the edge of the mother, and these little ones will then grow on to replace those that have been lost.
2. How to Care for Air plants?
A general guide to air plant care – Air plants thrive in filtered light, warm temperatures, and fresh air. They may also be placed on a moistened piece of paper towel to absorb excess water. Air plants can handle an occasional misting or spray, but are not meant to be bathed in water regularly. When watering your own plants, try to provide them the same temperature, humidity and light characteristics that they had when growing in your pot or growing tray or flash dripped from opening a bag of cuttings. Water sparingly on dry soil until it’s absorbed through the root system. Air plants love humid environments; create an environment around 70-80% humidity at room temperature.
